Power Shopping 101

Someone emailed me asking my strategy towards shopping and how to get started on the path towards frugality. Each family is different but for us these are the key points:

  1. If you don't have a budget begin by tracking your expenses for a couple of weeks and documenting your key or repetitive purchases. Once you know how much you are spending begin by aiming towards 80% of your average.
  2. Initially I distributed my budget giving me an allowance to stockpile. This allowed me to spend money on items I did not need immediately. Having a stockpile budget is particularly important for Pharmacy Games such as CVS, Rite-Aid and Walgreens. Crystal teaches you how here.
  3. Select your top 5 stores. For me it is CVS, Walmart, Target, Kroger and H Mart.
  4. From your budget set aside $5.00 each week towards bulk purchases. Also add any surplus you may have at the end of the week towards this fund.
  5. If no sale is available high value coupons should be used in your cheapest store. Coupons with potential for doubling or tripling should be used at stores offering these programs.
  6. Set aside 10 minutes each day for internet coupon printing. High value coupons reach limit fast
  7. Set aside a night a week for menu planning a coupon cutting.
  8. Plan your menu against the items already available in your pantry and only buy whatever extras you need. Use your surplus to buy items on sale
  9. It is ok to buy meat from the daily specials rack. Freeze it or use it right away.
  10. Buy your rice at the Indian Store your beans at the Mexican store.
  11. Vegetables are cheaper and more varied at ethnic stores. I like Fiesta and H-Mart.
  12. Take advantage of the gift card offers by Target. Combined with coupons these offers are often great fun. Keep your gift card for rolling into the next offer
  13. Load all digital coupons to all store cards.
  14. Go to a store with grains and nuts by the pound and buy really small amounts of dry fruit and nuts to add variety to many dishes.
We currently spend $40 per week. This includes all groceries, toiletries and cleaning supplies. We cook all three meals at home and I pack lunch for my husband.

Part II coming soon

Healthy Choice $2.00 Coupon

Go here and print a $2.00 coupon for Healthy Choice frozen entrees. Target has the steamers at $2.59. Tom Thumb has the meals at $2.39. Walmart often prices these entrees below $2.00.
Remember you can print this coupon twice. Yay for free lunch!

Avocados From Mexico

I was selected to host a party celebrating the delicious wonders of Avocados from Mexico. The lovely marketers at www.houseparty.com just shipped a box full of goodies to help me host. The goodie kit includes a gift card to help me with the party expenses chip baggie clips for my guests, a cutting board, theme poster and more.

You too can be selected as a host by enrolling here I am particularly tickled by the idea of hosting a Martha Stewart Craft Party or a Betty Crocker cookie party.

This is a really neat opportunity to help marketers reach us with very creative campaigns. It is also a chance for us to practice hospitality and enjoy the company of our friends and family. Sadly; we are a generation prone to isolation with an average of 2.1 friends per person. Let's change that!

Happy Day to all!

Our Blessings

This week the sales and deals are a bit low. This coincides with marketing strategies which keep the best deals aligned with the timing in which most people receive paychecks. This coming weekend we will be traveling to the Desiring God Conference in Minneapolis. We are proud of our costs so far. Separate from the conference fees we were able to get super saver fares with American for $69 each way. For our hotel we selected Hotwire and snagged a deal for $61 per night at the Hilton. I will be shopping for car rental probably also using Hotwire.

I invite you to celebrate your blessings and contemplate upon the goodness of The King as you consider the following statistics:

  • 80% of the world population lives under poverty levels making less than $10 per day per family.
  • 34% of the world population has indoor plumbing and access to running water.
  • 77% of the world population does not know Christ as their Lord & Savior
  • 25,000 children die daily of malnutrition
How good is our King and Savior. His provision towards us so great. His mercy so amazing.

Friday's Chinese Take Out (Fried Rice)

Starting today each Friday I will post an easy and affordable Chinese recipe to help you quench the cravings for take out. Today we start with:

Fried Rice

3 cups of leftover steamed rice stored overnight in the refrigerator
3 eggs
5 green onions (half a bunch)
5 slices of smoked ham or smoked bacon precooked
1/2 cup of soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon white pepper (adjust to preference)
1/2 teaspoon MSG I prefer Ajinomoto over Accent (you may skip this part if you are allergic)
4 tablespoons of oil

-optional ingredients-
leftover cooked shrimp
sauteed cubed carrots or frozen peas
leftover cooked chicken
water chestnuts

UTENSILS
Wok or large skillet
mixing bowl
clean spray bottle
wooden spoon
spatula
paper towels

STEPS

  1. Chop onions and meat into small squares and set aside
  2. Heat wok or skillet with 2 tablespoons of oil until a drop of water sizzles.
  3. Crack eggs open and season with a pinch of white pepper, salt and MSG.
  4. Pour eggs in wok to create an omelet. Make sure it is well cooked showing golden brown spots. turn it with spatula and cook both sides equally. Pull from wok and drain excess oil in paper towels.
  5. Loosen cold rice with hands, add half tablespoon of oil to your wok and add rice little by little ensuring it warms up evenly and it remains loose.
  6. Create a crater in the middle of the warm rice and add the onion and meat to warm without mixing with the rice until you can sense the fragrance of onion and warm meat.
  7. Fold rice gently and sprinkle pepper, salt and MSG to taste.
  8. Place your soy sauce in a spray bottle, spray small amounts and mix while keeping the rice over high heat.
  9. Chop your omelet into half inch squares and fold into mixture of rice keeping it on high heat for two extra minutes
Enjoy!

Buying Affordable Vegetables

If you live in the Northern Suburbs of Dallas you may find it challenging to find an assortment of fresh vegetables and fruit at an affordable price. When it comes to produce there is very little couponing to be done and there are never rebates. If you are new to the area here are a few recommendations that may prove useful:

  • Fiesta Supermarkets There is a Plano and a Carrollton location. I prefer the Carrollton location which is in the intersection of Beltline and Josey Lane.
  • Super H Mart This is a very large Korean supermarket with very affordable fish, veggies and fruit. They have a large variety of exotics at reasonable prices. Avoid Sundays due to overcrowding.
  • El Rancho This is a new addition to the hispanic themed supermarket. Great for staples such as tomatoes and onions.

Click HERE and enter your email in the bottom right corner- you will get a coupon for a FREE shaving kit from Art of Shaving stores valued at $25 and a $25 coupon toward a full size kit.
.
Keep in mind there are only a handful of Art of Shaving stores.

Their products are really good! My husband particularly likes the lavender fragrance shaving cream.

Not as smooth as some British brands, but certainly better than drugstore brands

Thank you Charlene at myfrugaladventures.com

End of Summer Travel

I worked in the travel industry for a very long time. Hotwire continues to be my favorite to book obscure hotel reservations. Their geographical limits are very clear and their star ratings strict. I always select 3.5 star and above. If you are the type that enjoys freebies like free breakfast and free shuttle your best bets will be 3 star properties. Finally anytime you are shopping for travel try to enter the specific portal via ebates. This ensures a little extra profit for you while keeping the same low prices.

Happy Travels!

Perspective

On Saturday I went to Kroger to take advantage of the Doubles Mega Event. I arrived early along with many other couponers. In a country blessed with so much I was surprised to observe the following:

  1. There was urgency, even anxiety in the facial expressions of the majority of the shoppers.
  2. Courtesy was scarce and smiles non-existent both amongst shoppers and supermarket staff.
  3. Staff was overzealous in the manner in which they handled coupons.
  4. There was an increased participation of male solo shoppers with coupons as well as husbands assisting with the second cart.
As a family of two our needs for food in bulk are particularly small. I wholeheartedly believe I have a responsibility to be a good steward of our resources and stockpile when applicable with the vision of sound management but without loosing perspective that we are to trust God for the day and ask for our daily bread in confidence that he is a trustworthy provider. In looking at this huge pile of food I am compelled to prayerfully audit my attitude towards provision and consider the following:

  1. My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and as such I must care for it and respect it. Excess in eating does not honor God. Even when I have plenty it is my duty to eat to nourish my body and not to satisfy my cravings.
  2. I have both the obligation and the privilege to share my blessings. Not the stuff that I like the least or the items of lesser quality or nutritional value. I must share it all reminding myself that I am to love my neighbor.
  3. God has blessed me with the resources, creativity and time to stockpile. I cannot allow myself to do it with a heart of fear for my future provision. Instead I must do it in trusting the King and giving thanks for the portion I receive daily.
  4. The total out of pocket of this shopping excursion represents 1.5 months household income for a family in Haiti.
  5. All that I have is not mine, it is entrusted to me and I will have to give account.
  6. I am reminded of the feeding of the 5,000. God can do much with little. God can do much in the place where I am. God does not find pleasure in waste instead he desires for us to optimize even the last crumbs of His blessings.
For those of you that are number focused my final results are as follows:

Out of Pocket $65.52
Total Coupon Savings $101.86
Bonus Coupon Match $69.48
Store Savings (sales) $34.63
Catalina $1.00
